Erlings afsked med Sorø Akademi, oktober 2003

Erling taking leave of Sorø Academy, October 2003

For Erling Kristensen, Maria's and my Rosborg-headmaster the 31st of October was his last day as headmaster of Sorø Academy's School. A lot of people travelled to Sorø to mark the day. Some of the people of the "Rosborg-years": The music-teacher Gustav Jahn, the former headmaster of Hældagerskolen (where Rosborg was placed during its first two years of existence) Aksel Mark and his wife, Kirsten and Maria and I are standing in front of "Klosterporten" / the gate of the medieval abbey, which was the offspring of today's School in Sorø. "Klosterporten" is the oldest residential house in Denmark. It is told, that Saxo sat here writing his chronicle back in the 12th century, and today one of the teachers of the school lives here.

Here we are in front of "Fraterbrønden" / "The Fraterwell" between the abbey church and the main building of the academy. The well served as water supply of the monks, but has also been in use later. The well-known Danish poet B. S. Ingemann, who was a teacher of the academy 150 years ago, promised one of his visitors, that he would make him a cup of tea made of water from The Fraterwell.

Inside the big building we soon met Erling in rare form, standing here with his wife Lena on one side, and the historian (known from Danish television) Piet van Deurs - an old student of Sorø Academy on the other.

En masse mennesker samledes i de flotte sale.

A lot of people gathered in the spectacular rooms.

Og der var mange taler. Her taler tidligere undervisningsminister Ole Vig Jensen.

There were a lot of speeches. Here former minister of education Ole Vig Jensen speaks.

A portrait of Erling was painted in 1999 by the painter Mogens Hoff. It has been put away since to be unveiled on the day, where Erling resigned from his post.

At 3.00 p.m. coffee was served in another one of the spectacular rooms.

Not many staff-rooms have got their own throne, but at Sorø Academy there is one. Here Erlings two grandchildren Silas and Magnus have placed themselves there. Erling says, that normally it costs a crate of beer to sit there!

At 3.30 we all gathered in the abbey church, where Erling had arranged a classical concert. The church, where the graves of the warrior/bishop Absalon and the writer Ludvig Holberg and king Christoffer and his queen Eufemia can be found, has the biggest choir crucifix of Northern Europe, it can be seen in the middle of the picture.

A very fine concert with songs by Haydn and Mozart and the first movement of Mozart's concerto for flute then took place. The orchestra and the soloists were all recent or former pupils of the school. Mozart's "Te Deum" performed by the choir of the school ended this extremely well-played and well-sung concert.

Then the time was up for Erling to deliver his speech of thanks. Among other things he mentioned, that he had learned from his music-teacher at Rosborg, Gustav Jahn, that music had to be performed properly. He had brought that with him to Sorø, and therefore he was particularly happy about the fine concert. Furthermore he mentioned a lot of persons, particularly his grandson Silas, who - being only 2 and a half years old - had endured this - to him - rather long day splendidly. He knew, Erling said, that this used to be granddad's office, but it isn't his anymore. And that was exactly the important thing about the 31 st of October in Sorø.
